04 Aug The Man, The Kid and The Donkey
The other day I was having a chat with someone who shared with me a story about a donkey that fell in a well. You can read it here. It reminded me of my own donkey story. I’m not sure where my story came from. I think I heard it somewhere while travelling. We don’t have a lot of donkeys in Australia. I have seen a lot of them in other parts of the world. Anyway, here it goes …
There was a man, a kid and a donkey. The three of them were walking in the street. People looked at them and said “That man is not very smart. He has a donkey and he is not riding it.” The man heard that so he rode the donkey while the kid walked then people in the street said “Look at that man he is riding the donkey while he lets the poor kid walk.” After the man heard that he put the kid on the donkey and he walked then people said “Can you believe this? The man is walking while the kid is riding …” The man heard this then he rode the donkey too. Now the kid and the man are riding the donkey. People in the street said “Look at that cruel man. He and the kid are riding the donkey, poor donkey.” The man heard this and was really frustrated. He put the donkey on his back and carried it. The people in the street saw that then said “Look at that stupid man he is carrying the donkey. He should be riding it.”
The moral of the story is that no matter what you do you will not be able to please everyone. Some people want to satisfy their parents’ desires by getting a degree to become a doctor or a lawyer or by marrying a specific person chosen for them. Other people want to please people important to them by doing this and that. In the end, you achieve the degree, marry the chosen person or do the thing that you needed to do but you don’t feel happy or content as it is not really what you wanted to do. What I have learnt is that you need to get rid of the disease to please. Do what makes you happy provided you don’t hurt anyone in the process. No one will make you happy but you. When you achieve what you really want you will feel better about yourself. You will also be inspiring to others.
